Celler Comunica

Pep and Patri are devoted to their dirt. These two Granite-lovers have found their home at Mas d’en Cosme estate in Montsant, Catalyuna. Here, their indigenous varietals love the estate’s granitic soils almost as much as they do.

With an impressive collective experience that spans many years and Spain’s Mediterranean coast, Patri Morillo and Pep Aguilar now turn to their project, Celler Comunica. Granite, and their obsession with it, drew them to Mas d’en Cosme, where the decomposed granite soil flecked with slate and some calcareous clay terraces lay the foundations of the vineyards. These granite/slate soils are more akin to Priorat than Montsant. They prefer to spend more time in the vineyards than the winery, tending Garnatxa Negra (Red Grenache), Garnatxa Peluda (the pleasingly named Hairy Grenache), Carinyena (Carignan), Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo), and a small amount of Syrah (Shiraz) organically by hand.

The wines of Montsant, often called ‘the poor man’s Priorat’ not only for its proximity but because many producers chase their famous neighbours’ style - high alcohol, oak, and extraction are all familiar. But, on the contrary, Celler Comunica has the most delicate approach with no oak, fining, or filtering.

“We often describe ourselves as “chefs of our terroirs”. The truth be told, though, we don’t really do much cooking! We tend to spend our time preserving the unique elements of each vineyard plot and chasing after that special something that each soil transmits.”

The work in the winery does not change these wines; the vineyard and season are the elements captured in the glass, and marvellously so.
